Saint Martin
It is an island in the northeast of the Antilles located 250 km north of the archipelago of Guadalupe and 240 km east of Puerto Rico. Its territory is shared by two countries:
- the northern portion, which has constituted an overseas collectivity since 2007, belongs to the French Republic;
- the southern portion, which until 2010 was part of the Netherlands Antilles, thus belonging to the Netherlands, now has autonomous administration, a country belonging to the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
The island was discovered by Christopher Columbus, on his second visit to the Americas, when he flew with his fleet off the island on November 11, 1493, St. Martin of Tours. In honor of the saint of the day (in Spanish, San Martin), the navigator gave the island the name of San Martin - later to be translated by the French settlers to Saint-Martin, and by the Dutch to Sint Maarten.
The area of the island is 87 km², with 34 km² on the Dutch side and 53 km² on the French side. The nearest neighboring islands of St. Martin are Anguilla (to the north, from which it is separated by the Channel of Anguilla) and St. Bartholomew. Saba, Saint Eustatius, Saint Kitts and Nevis are further away but are visible. There are a dozen islets around; the most touristic is Pinel, with its three beaches, in addition to Tintamarre, three kilometers from the coast of São Martinho.
