Greece
Greece is a country in southern Europe whose capital Athens is the largest city.
Greece is strategically located at the crossroads of Europe, West Asia and Africa, and shares land borders with Albania in the northwest, Republic of Macedonia and Bulgaria in the north, and Turkey in the northeast.
The country is made up of nine geographical regions: Macedonia, Central Greece, the Peloponnese, Thessaly, Epirus, the Aegean Islands (including the Dodecanese and Cyclades), Thrace, Crete and the Ionian Islands.
The Aegean Sea to the east of the continent, the Ionian Sea to the west, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south.
Greece has the longest coastline in the Mediterranean Basin and the longest coast in the world, with a large number of islands (about 1,400 of which 227 are inhabited). Eighty percent of Greece is made up of mountains, of which Mount Olympus is the highest at 2,917 m (9,570 ft).
Greece is considered the cradle of all Western civilization. As such, it is the cradle of democracy, Western philosophy, the Olympic Games, literature, Western historiography, political science, great scientific and mathematical principles, and Western drama, including tragedy and comedy.
Greece's cultural and technological achievements have greatly influenced the world, with many aspects of Greek civilization being transmitted to the East through the campaigns of Alexander the Great, and to the West through the Roman Empire. This rich legacy is partly reflected in the UNESCO World Heritage. The modern Greek state, which comprises most of the historical core of Greek civilization, was created in 1830 after the Greek War of Independence of the Ottoman Empire.

Gastronomy
Greek cuisine is surely one of the highest standards of Mediterranean cuisine with Italian, Balkan and Turkish influences. Its preparation is simple and high quality raw materials are used.
Greek cuisine has four secrets: fresh ingredients, proper use of spices and herbs, famous olive oil and simplicity.
Thanks to its climate and its geographical position along the Mediterranean, Greece has the privilege of producing very tasty ingredients. Most vegetables are grown naturally and thus preserve more aroma and flavor. Every dish of Greek cuisine uses herbs and spices, harvested from the mountains and the countryside, and are famous for their strong, even-from-the-distance aroma and taste. Delighting in one of the many Greek dishes, the smell of oregano, mint, cinnamon, rosemary surrounds us and makes the food much more palatable.
The most tasty and well-known Greek specialties are moussaca (eggplants accompanied by lamb meat and seasoned with cinnamon and red wine) and avgolemono (rice with chicken, eggs with lemon juice). Also noteworthy are roast meats and dishes made with fish or seafood. Dishes usually include starters such as keftedes (spicy meat balls) or tzatziki, a yogurt, cucumber and dill sauce. For dessert, among others, are baklavas: a puff pastry with honey, vanilla and almonds.
Greek salads are famous internationally. They are fresh and easy to make. They do not lack olive oil, tomatoes, cucumbers and feta cheese, which is possibly the best known product in the country. It is also very common to add to these salads the famous Greek olives.
Within the Greek gastronomic tradition we also find two typical drinks of the country: retsina, made with pine nuts and ouzo, an anise drink that becomes dark when adding water.
Weather
The climate in Greece is predominantly Mediterranean. However, due to the unique geography of the country, Greece has a remarkable array of micro climates and local variations. To the west of the Pindo mountain range, the climate is generally humid and has some maritime characteristics. The east of the Pindo mountain range is usually drier and windier in summer. The highest peak is Mount Olympus at 9570 feet (2,916.9 m) high. Areas in northern Greece have a transitional climate between the continental and the Mediterranean climate. Mountainous areas have an alpine climate.
Security
Most visits to Greece are hassle-free, but wallet and purse theft are common in the metro and crowded tourist places. Leave valuables in a safe place in the hotel or apartment. At least the same level of personal safety awareness should be maintained as in any major city. There were some racially motivated attacks, especially in the downtown areas.
