In caves and rocky shelters of the Cunas River, remains of hunters and farmers have been found, dating back to 10,000 years BC; During the time of the Incas, in the 10th century, they were part of the great Wanka nation. Chupaca in particular, constituted a sub group called Janan Wanka, that is to say "Wankas de Arriba".

In 1 820, when the Arenales expedition arrived, sent by General Don José de San Martín, the Chupaquinos were the first to bow to the cause of independence. Later, on their own account, they organized into a guerrilla group.

On April 19, 1882, the group called “los empochados de Chupaca”, made up of peasants without much education, only with rejones, spears and huaracas, in unequal battle, faced the Chileans in the pampas of Carato. For these feats, the province of Chupaca, bears the coat of arms of "Dos Veces Heroica".

Chupaca ´´Heroic Province´´. Located at 3,263 m.s.n.m. and 297 km from Lima, with a mild and dry climate. The Ñahuimpuquio Lagoon stands out, 15 km west of the city of Huancayo, with a 7-hectare water mirror and trout farming, where you can take rides in mules and boats.

Places of interest

Laguna de Ñahuimpuquio Its name comes from a word ´Quechua´ which means Eye of Water. Located 5 minutes from the Ahuac district in the Chupaca province (11 kilometers from Huancayo). It has a wild fauna typical of its ecosystem. In its waters you can see a beautiful water mirror of approximately 7 hectares. On the surface of the lagoon grows a floating champa called pulichampa, which can support the weight of some people. On the side of this lagoon is a hill with the Arhuaturo Archaeological Remains.

A mystery is told about this lagoon; It is said that this lagoon is in some way connected with the Paca Lagoon, since ancient legends tell of some accidents such as people who drowned in the paca lagoon and that their bodies were not found, until after some time in this lagoon.
