About 25 kilometers from Lisbon, the palace is a monumental Baroque monastery. It was initiated in 1717 by the initiative of John V of Portugal, by virtue of a promise that the young king had made if the queen D. Maria Ana of Austria gave him descent.
convent
In 1715, was founded the Convent of Our Lady and Santo António de Mafra, that belonged to the ecclesiastical province of Arrábida. It originated in a community of Hospício do Espírito Santo. In 1730, the Church of Our Lady and St. Anthony, near Mafra, was sacred, and the abovementioned community was transferred there. Between 1771 and 1791, shortly after Clement XIV, July 4, 1770, at the request of the Marquis of Pombal, it was occupied by the Regular Canons of St. Augustine of the Congregation of Santa Cruz de Coimbra; the Franciscans of the Arrábida Province left the Convent of Mafra in May 1771. In 1791, the Canons Regulares de Santo Agostinho left the Mafra building.
Palace
There are those who maintain that the work was constructed by means of a promise made concerning a disease that the king suffered. The birth of Princess Maria Barbara determined the fulfillment of the promise. This baroque palace and convent dominates the town of Mafra. It was classified as a National Monument in 1910 and one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal on July 7, 2007.
The palace was popular for members of the royal family, who liked to hunt on the cover. Nowadays a project for the preservation of the Iberian wolves takes place here. The best furnishings and works of art were taken to Brazil, where the royal family set off when the French invaded in 1807. The monastery was abandoned in 1834 after the dissolution of religious orders. During the last reigns of the Bragança dynasty, the Palace was used as a hunting lodge, and on October 5, 1910, the last king D. Manuel II left for Ericeira beach, where his royal yacht took him to exile .
In the palace one can visit the pharmacy, with beautiful pots for medicines and some surgical instruments, the hospital, with sixteen private cubicles from which patients could see and hear mass in the adjacent chapel without leaving their beds. Upstairs, the sumptuous rooms of the palace extend along the length of the western facade, with the king's rooms at one end and those of the queen at the other, 232 meters away. In the center, the imposing façade is enhanced by the towers of the basilica covered with a dome.
The Palace also has two chimes, manufactured in Antwerp by D. João V, with a total of 92 bells weighing more than 200 tons and are considered the largest and best in the world.
The biggest treasure of the palace of Mafra is its library
Classified as a National Monument in 1910, it was one of the finalists for one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal on July 7, 2007.
