This is Europe's oldest working synagogue, which dates back to 1270 and is also one of the capital's oldest Gothic buildings. This synagogue is the spiritual heart of the Jewish community of Prague, and today it is the only one that provides the religious service.
Called "Nova" at the time of its construction in the thirteenth century by its temporary relationship with the other existing synagogues (disappeared since), it became the "Old-New" sigangoga as new synagogues were built in the neighborhood of Josefov.
From the outside, it looks quite austere, because of its brick façade and its not very high walls, compared to the Art Nouveau buildings we found in the neighborhood. To enter the building it is necessary to descend some stairs, due to the lifting of the ground. After crossing the antechamber, you will have access to the main room which houses on its ceiling a magnificent tympanum decorated with a vine in bas-relief, whose roots represent the 12 tribes of Israel.
A large room separated into two tall naves, whose galleries are supported by hexagonal columns decorated with ornamental foliage. The center of sacred space is dominated by the bimah, a palanque used for reading the Torah, and surrounded by a Gothic iron fence. The banner was a gift of the Emperor Ferdinand III to the Jewish community of Prague in form of thanks to its participation in the defense of the city against the Swedes. The Torah is in its usual place near the eastern wall.
Attention: the Old New Synagogue is visited separately from the other synagogues that are part of the Jewish Museum. This is closed every Saturday and days of Jewish religious festivals.
Opening days:
Every day except Saturdays and days of Jewish religious festivals.
November to March: between 9am and 4:30 p.m.
