A postcard of João Pessoa, Parque Solon de Lucena is one of the most beautiful landscape expressions of the capital. Originally designed by landscaper Burle Marx, the gardens preserve specimens of pau-d´arco, bamboos and beautiful imperial palm trees that accompany the design of the central lake.
Located in the center of Paraíba's capital, the park has beautiful gardens and a lagoon with a large water mirror surrounded by imperial palm trees, becoming a true postcard of the city. The park brings lots of green, leafy trees and food stalls. Around the park are the most important shops and supermarkets in the city. In the park there are also bus stops, restaurants, hotels, newsagents and several important buildings. It is one of the main green areas of the city, along with the Arruda Câmara park, Botanical Garden and others.
Pond of the park.
The park is an ideal place for social movements, cultural events, health and educational campaigns, etc. It has several tree species, mainly Ipê, Pau-Brasil and Bambu. It is also a great place to do sports such as walking, cycling, running and skating.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, it was known as Lagoa dos Irerês (CPCH, 1999) due to the large number of mallards that had been swimming in its waters (Cabral, 1998c). At this time, the lagoon was part of a Jesuit site (Rodriguez, 1992). In the same place, the Lagoa da Engenho (Cabral, 1998c) later worked.
Under the administration of Governor Solon de Lucena and Mayor Walfredo Guedes Pereira, around 1922 (Rodriguez, 1992), the old lagoon was finally transformed into a public park. Hence the name Parque Solon de Lucena, named after the governor of the time (Cabral, 1998c).
Its gardens are works of landscape artist Burle Marx. Noteworthy among others is the necklace of palm trees planted around the entire lagoon (Rodriguez, 1992), as well as the bamboo and specimens of pau-d'arco and other trees of the Atlantic Forest Reserve (Nóbrega). , 1982). Another highlight is the light source (CPCH, 1999), which features characteristics of contemporary Brazilian architecture (Rodriguez, 1992). In the lagoon, what most catches the public attention are the yellow ipe, which can usually be seen between September and November.
