Its foundation dates from January 30, 1766, during the colonial government of Viceroy Manuel de Amat y Juniet, preceded in antiquity by the bullring of Béjar and Zaragoza, in Spain. The Spanish square of Seville began its construction in 1749, but it was formally concluded after that of Acho. Its construction is of noble material, adobe and wood, having survived the earthquakes that the city of Lima has suffered since its construction.
In 1945 it was remodeled, expanding its capacity to 13 thousand spectators, but to the detriment of the dimensions of the arena, which was no longer the largest in the world. The remodeling was carried out by the engineer Francisco Graña Garland.
In Spanish, the word acho or (better) hacho means ´´High place near the coast, from where the sea is well discovered and where they used to signal with fire´´ (http://buscon.rae.es/draeI /); The square in its early years was called indistinctly ´´del Hacho´´ or ´´del Acho´´. The San Cristóbal hill, at the foot of which this square rises, would then be the Hacho de Lima (compare with the Hacho de Ceuta).
In its exteriors, the Plaza de Acho has a circular shape, with a series of tall and narrow rectangular portals that follow one another, in groups of 6, along the front of the arena. Inside the enclosure and even outside the arena the chapel is located to the northeast side, the slaughterhouse to the east side, and the corrals to the north side. It has an esplanade on its west side, known as Patio de Sombra, where the Bullfighting Museum, the Plaza Restaurant, and a series of sculptural works allusive to bullfighting figures and characters linked to bullfighting are located, among which stand out sculptures by Victorio Macho, Miguel Baca Rossi, and Raúl Franco Ochoa.
In the Rimac district. The Acho bullring, bullring located in Lima, Peru. It is the oldest bullring in America, one of the largest in the world, the most important of the 56 official bullrings in that country, and considered one of the most prestigious in the American continent. In it the Fair of the Lord of Miracles is held annually, which brings together the main figures of bullfighting.
Classified as a historical monument and located next to the historic center of Lima in the Rímac district, it also constitutes a historical attraction of the capital of Peru. Cultural events of the most diverse nature, bullfighting and non-bullfighting, are currently held on its premises during the months when the fair is not held.
