A great military and political leader, the life of Count Albert de Wallenstein (1583-1634) resembles that of a character from an adventure novel: extremely rich, he ended his life tragically by being assassinated for treason to the state. This character wanted to build this immense palace for his personal use and in honor of his power and success. This is the most monumental residence of the neighborhood next to the Prague Castle.
The lot of this megalomaniacal project was released thanks to the destruction of more than 20 houses, a brick factory and three gardens. Between 1624 and 1630, the count ordered the construction of a large set of buildings connected by a mannerist garden, decorated with bronze sculptures, an Earth Hall and an artificial cave.
The palace itself, the work of Italian artists, shows a style in transition between Mannerism and the First Baroque. The main facade is extended by 60 m to the Wallestein Square and has several windows and three portals. From the main courtyard you can admire the incredibly tall and narrow private chapel, decorated with frescoes and golden stucco, in which family members used to watch religious celebrations from the private terraces located on each floor.
Wallenstein Palace is currently home to the Czech Senate. However, it is possible to visit its beautiful reception rooms on Saturdays and Sundays (free admission).
The most exceptional place is the representation room, which occupies two floors of 288m wide each. Its monumental architecture is one of the most brilliant works of the First Baroque in Central Europe. A succession of columns creates the dynamism of the room, which is decorated with stuccos representing military trophies, fruit wreaths and little angels with amorous expressions. Monumental chimneys and large mirrors enhance the feel of space. On the roof a fresco by Baccio del Bianco depicts Mars, the God of War in his chariot drawn by winged horses, wishing to represent the warlike virtues of the Count of Wallenstein.
Other beautiful rooms are open to the public during the weekend, among which are worth mentioning the Hall of the Cahermosas are open to the public during the weekends among which include the Hall of Gentlemen, the Audience Hall and the Mythological Corridor.
Opening days:
Only Saturdays and Sundays, 10am - 5pm
