Abancay, a city with a spring climate, narrow streets, little white houses with corrugated iron roofs or red tiles.
Little is known about its origins; However, the chroniclers relate that its first inhabitants were made up of tribes from various areas that had their origin in the Quechua culture. The legendary Chancas had their seat in the Andahuaylas region, a group of tribes that due to their belligerence has gone down in history as one of the most fierce and rebellious peoples of ancient Peru.
The chroniclers say that the Chancas came to prepare for years to conquer the Imperial City of Cusco and that had it not been for the great figure and strategy of the Inca Pachacutec, the Inca empire would have succumbed.
When the conquerors established the first political organization of the colony, almost the entire extension of the present department was under the jurisdiction of the Huamanga authorities; however no memories of the founding of cities and towns are preserved.
During the struggle for emancipation and independence, Apurímac contributed his best children to this cause. One of them was Mateo Pumacahua who led a movement that spread to Andahuaylas. Special mention should be made of Micaela Bastidas who, together with her husband José Gabriel Condorcanqui -Túpac Amaru II-, faced the torture of the Spanish oppressor and gave her life for freedom.
At the beginning of the Republic, Abancay belonged to Cusco. On April 28, 1873, by law, the department of Apurímac was created based on the provinces of Andahuaylas (Ayacucho), Antabamba, Aymaraes, and Cotabambas (Cusco), placing Abancay as its capital.
The name of the Department of Apurímac, etymologically comes from the Quechua word Apu = God, Rimac = speaker; which means The God Who Speaks.
The department of Apurimac is located in the southern central region of Peru. The relief of the department is rugged due to being located in the most remote peaks of the Andes between valleys and mountains.
The variety of its tourist and cultural attractions allows the visitor to enjoy beautiful natural landscapes; in addition to knowing important archaeological remains.
