The territory in which Chimbote is currently located has been successively populated by the Moche, Wari, Recuay, Chimú and Inca cultures. It is witnessed by the archaeological centers of Punkurí, Pañamarca, Huaca San Pedro, El Castillo, San José de Moro, among others. It is thought that the same ethnic group populated these lands, the Mayao, but the aborigines were later dispersed and decimated when the Conquest of America occurred.
In 1774, in the book Introduction and Description of the Provinces belonging to the Archdiocese of Lima by Cosme Bueno, the name of Chimbote appears for the first time in an official document. The reference narrates ´´ ... that the old Villa of Santa María de la Parrilla (Santa), has an annexed little fishing village named Chimbote´´. Ethnography refers to these first settlers as fishermen from the Huanchaco spa, east of Trujillo, which is why they were called huanchaqueros.
In 1815, the ownership of these lands was granted to the settlers by Martín Plaza Larrabeitia, Assistant Deputy Delegate of the Crown of Spain, when the population barely exceeded one hundred. Its inhabitants were mainly dedicated to artisanal fishing and logging of firewood.
Chimbote is a city on the north-central coast of Peru, capital of the Province of Santa (Ancash), located on the shores of the Pacific Ocean in El Ferrol Bay, at the mouth of the Lacramarca River. It is the most populated city in the Department of Ancash.
Chimbote is known for the port activity that takes place there, as well as for being the important headquarters of the country's fishing and steel industry, as well as being the commercial hub of this part of the country. In the middle of the 20th century, it became the fishing port with the highest production in the world.
Together with Nuevo Chimbote they make up a single metropolitan area, which as of 2007 is the eighth most populated in the country.
Archaeological complex of Sechín, located on the Casma-Huaraz highway 5 km NE of Casma. It is a ceremonial center made up of 5 buildings, an underground gallery and a semi-sunken square with an age of approximately 5000 years.
