En 1554, il fut pratiquement achevé selon la forme de la Première Renaissance.
La nouvelle église a maintenant trois nefs et quatre travées, sans transept, avec un seul couvercle en bois pour toutes les nefs et une tête de lit formée uniquement par ousia.
Le tremblement de terre de 1755 a causé de graves dommages. Tout a été initialement réparé, mais il a fallu reconstruire l'église quelques années plus tard.
L'ancienne chapelle médiévale de São Martinho a été profondément modifiée dans le deuxième quart du XVIe siècle, lorsque ce temple a été élevé au rang de siège paroissial.
Les travaux ont commencé au début du 19ème siècle sous la direction de l'architecte Francisco Xavier Fabri, amené d'Italie par le grand mécène, l'évêque de l'Algarve, D. Francisco Gomes do Avelar. Cet architecte a respecté les valeurs esthétiques préexistantes, ayant cependant construit une nouvelle façade de composition néo-classique majestueuse.
