It was Viceroy Francisco de Toledo who arranged to group the different ayllus of Indians who settled in the area in a reduction, choosing for this the bay of ´´Guacho´´. Consequently, on August 24, 1571, this reduction was baptized with the name of San Bartolomé de Guachu.
During the Viceroyalty of Peru, the city belonged to the province of Huaura and was established as a port and fishing cove. In 1774, the viceroy José Antonio de Mendoza granted Huacho the category of town -until then it was considered a village-, with which it was allowed to build its main square.
Huacho was, like Huaura, a town that received and housed the members of the liberating expedition led by José de San Martín, participating on November 27, 1820 in the Liberating Cry on the balcony of Huaura, a fact still subject to historical verification .
On February 12, 1821, Huacho is elevated to a district, belonging to the province of Chancay, in the department of Lima. The Congress granted him the title of Fidelísima Villa on April 11, 1828, under the presidency of Don José de La Mar. On January 23, 1830, the province of Chancay was united with the province of Santa, pointing out the Villa as its provincial capital. of Supe. A few years later, the two provinces were separated again, leaving Chancay within the department of Lima and Santa in the department of Ancash. At that time, the city of Huaura was established as the capital of the province of Chancay. This lasted thirty years since on January 23, 1866 Huacho was established as the capital of the province of Chancay.
Among its technological advances, Huacho had from 1892 an urban tram service with animal traction, that is, using mules or horses for its movement, called ´´blood tramways´´, a service that extended to Huaura and that from 1920 to At the beginning of the 30s, it became electrified, being the first city, after Lima, to have its own electric tram.
Since 1911, it was the main headquarters of the Northwest Railroad of Peru that linked Huacho with Ancón, Sayan and Barranca.
On November 10, 1874, Huacho was elevated to the category of city and remained the capital of the province even when it was separated from Chancay (today Huaral province) and the province of Huaura was created. Currently, the city of Huacho is also the capital of the Regional Government of Lima.
It is a city on the central coast of Peru, capital of the Province of Huaura and regional headquarters of the Department of Lima, located in a bay formed by the Pacific Ocean, 148 km north of the city of Lima, near the mouth of the river. Huaura.
It is close to the Lomas de Lachay National Reserve. Its urban area occupies not only the homonymous district, but also the districts of Santa María to the east and Hualmay to the north.

This has given rise to an important cotton industry as well as soap and oil factories. The salt flats are interesting, and its beaches such as El Paraíso, where the archaeological complex of Bandurria is located. The important sugarcane production is concentrated in the Huaura valley.
It is well communicated with inland cities such as Sayán or Oyón, as well as with northern and southern cities such as Trujillo or Lima, through the Pan-American highway.
Huacho was one of the main commercial cities in the north of Lima. Among its attractions is its old casino, built by the Salinas family, landowners in the area until the 1950s, and whose different branches were alternately owners of the Andahuasi, Quipico, Humaya or Los Ángeles estates. Other important families of landowners in the valleys around Huacho are De Las Casas, Crousillat, De Rutté, Dall´Orto, Letts or Larraburre.
Population: 50,575 inhabitants (1993).
Among the huachanos the important community of Asian origin stands out, whose ancestors came mostly hired by the important estates in the area.
Huacho has a public university, the José Faustino Sánchez Carrión National University, which has several faculties, the Faculty of Human Medicine standing out among them.
Near Playa Chica, south of Huacho is the Archaeological Site of Bandurria civilization that could be the oldest in America. They would also have been suppliers of fish from Caral. [3]

Holy week is one of the most popular religious activities for people from Huacho and from various places. Huacho is also known for its exquisite stews such as: Huachano chicharrón, Huachana soup, duck ceviche, rabbit chicharrón, among others.
It also has beaches such as El Paraíso, Hornillos, El Colorado; The Islands of Huampanu and Isla Mazorca. We also find extensive fertile areas commonly known as ´´Campiña´´, where you can see old buildings, such as the Quipico farm, as well as small farms.
