Alicante
Alicante or Alacant, (both names are official), is a city and port in Spain, on the Costa Blanca, the capital of the province of Alicante and the region of Alacantí, in the south of the Valencian Community.
It is also a historic Mediterranean port.
Different civilizations have passed through these lands, leaving their mark, which can be seen in every corner of this emblematic city. All this contributes to the appeal of this modern city, with the main focus on tourism, but also a special interest in industry and commerce.
Alicante, located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, offers not only a wide range of services, but also a wide range of cultural activities, with its museums, its festivals and its natural areas, in particular the Island of Tabarca (Mediterranean Reserve Navy).
Tourism
The city is located in south-eastern Spain, in the south of the Valencia region. The province is designated with the tourist brand Costa Blanca. It has a typical Mediterranean landscape, with beaches interspersed with mountainous terrain.
The province hosts six declared festivals of International Tourist Interest: the Fuegoiras de San Juan on summer night in Alicante, the Habaneras International and Polyphonic Competition in Torrevieja, the Festival of Moors and Christians in Villajoyosa and Alcoy, Mystery Games of Elche , the Palm Sunday Procession in the city of Elche.
The city of Elche is also the site of the Palm Grove of Elche, having been awarded the World Heritage by UNESCO.
There are numerous archeological sites in Alicante, many of which belong to the Mediterranean basin in the Iberian Peninsula, also declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Known also for its kilometers of beaches, Alicante is a starting point for thousands of tourists every year.
Famous for its excellent climate, the city invites you to take a trip along the coast or visit the wonderful island of Tabarc.
With many historic buildings around the whole city, Alicante offers numerous tourist attractions, from cathedrals to churches and of course a wonderful harbor area.
During the summer, Alicante with its airport is an entry point for many tourists visiting the Costa Blanca, while in the winter months tourists tend to visit places along the coast such as Benidorm, Calpe and Denia.
Gastronomy
The gastronomy of Alicante is largely based on the Mediterranean Sea because of its proximity. Therefore fish is an important part of your diet. Rice is also prevalent in many of Alicante's dishes, which may be linked to the Muslim roots in Alicante culture.
The tortilla, is one of the most famous dishes, and from the abundant use of rice in Alicante follows the paella. Usually, it consists of rice with chicken or rabbit, or both, vegetables and almost always with seafood to spice the dish.
Like almost all of Spain, the famous tapas are a great way to sample a variety of local or national delicacies.
Weather
Alicante has a mild and arid Mediterranean climate, and with little rain all year round. Temperatures range between 6.3 ° C and 17.0 ° C in January and 21.2 ° C and 30.8 ° C in August, with the average annual temperature of 18.3 ° C.
The daily temperature variation is very small, as the maritime influence, although occasional episodes of west winds may exceed 15 ° C.
In relation to the annual oscillation, it is also reduced, so that the winters are mild and the summers are warm.
The precipitation is 311 millimeters per year, from September to October, the rainiest months due to torrential rainfall caused by the cold fall, which can reach more than 200 millimeters in 24 hours, causing severe flooding.
This irregularity explains why a year had only 37 rainy days for only 2,851 hours of sunshine.
