Fogo Island
Djarfogo, meaning Fogo Island, one of Cape Verde's ten islands, one of the most beautiful, is the most prominent island of the Cape Verde Leeward group rising to almost 3,000 m (10,000 ft) above sea level in its summit, peak of fire.
It was the second island to be discovered by Portuguese navigators on May 1, 1640, initially called São Filipe and later more properly identified by Fogo.
The entire island is a primitive still active volcano, with the last eruption occurring in 1995.
The volcano of Fogo Island is approximately 2829 meters, inviting a 3-4 hour climb to the huge and beautiful Chã das Caldeiras crater, an 8 km diameter caldera on the western side. The walls reach 1000 meters with a crater. 500 meters in diameter, and a depth of 180 meters
In Chã das Caldeiras resides a community with very particular physical characteristics. Descendants of a Frenchman nicknamed Montrond have fair skin and light eyes and curly, blond hair.
São Filipe, the island's capital, faces the sea overlooking the neighboring island of Brava.
Its paved alleys, with its numerous tree and flower gardens and its old colonial houses, the townhouses, mark the essential features of the island emanating attraction and charm.
Tourism
Majestic, growing around a still active volcano, it invites hiking lovers.
The volcano, imposing for its size and beauty, is undoubtedly the biggest tourist attraction on the island. Monte Velha and its forest are also of tourist interest, as well as the São Jorge Salinas, which are joined by the black sand beaches with beautiful corals and seaweed, for surface diving and great depths.
Tourist attractions are also the celebration of St. Philip's Day (May 1), patron of the municipality of the same name, is the main festival on the island of Fogo.
Commanded by the wealthiest families, who one by one succeed one another in the annual organization of the Feast of St. Philippe, follow the processions and processions, accompanied by the characteristic horse racing and skill tests of their riders, tradition that has lasted since 1940, always under the aegis of the Flag.
For this occasion come to São Filipe people from all over the archipelago and even emigrant foguenses who take the opportunity to review their families. The party, which before independence in 1975 did not have the current projection, is today one of the most important in Cape Verde, ends with the transmission of the flag to the family that will organize the following year's event.
St. John's Day (June 24), remembered on all the islands of the archipelago, is also an important festival on the island.
Gastronomy
From the various traditional dishes to Djagacida (made with cornmeal and beans), Xerém de festa (served mainly at Bandeira and wedding parties, accompanied by beef stew), Cachupa, Camoca, Gufongo (type of bread made from of cornmeal) are gastronomic references that deserve to be appreciated by visitors.
In Chã-das-Caldeiras there are a variety of products, such as regional wine, grapes, cheese, apple, among others. This island offers you a variety of unique typical dishes, as natural conditions here are conducive to the development of agricultural products and beyond.
Weather
The climate of Fogo Island is typically tropical, with very hot temperatures all year round.
As one of the three most rugged islands, it benefits from higher rainfall.
From November to July it is dry while from August to October is the "rainy season".
