La Jalca (2,900 m.a.s.l.) is the capital of Chachapoyan folklore. Its artistic wealth is fully manifested in the feast of San Juan (June), a pagan-religious celebration in which a series of colorful and joyful dances are performed, some of them with pre-Hispanic roots.
One of the most interesting folkloric prints is a dance that represents the legend of “Juan, el Osito”, the son of a spectacled bear that he fathered in a young woman from Jalisco, whom he had kidnapped.
It is located 70 kilometers from Chachapoyas, the regional capital. Jalca, a town of pre-Inca origin that preserves the characteristics of traditional architecture. The houses have thatched roofs and the colonial church is probably the oldest in the area.
Apart from its dances, the Jalca Grande is a town of industrious peasants, some of whom speak Quechua with unique characteristics. In its small urban heart, the Ethnic museum and the beautiful 16th century colonial church stand out, with a rustic and striking stone bell tower. Its bucolic landscape adds an extra dose of beauty.
