It was founded on March 23, 1536 (474 years) by Pedro de Añazco and Juan de Ampudia. The city of Jamundí, head of the municipality of its name, is the oldest in Valle del Cauca. It was founded at the end of March 1536, in Holy Week of that year, that is, four months before Santiago de Cali.

After the founding of Quito in 1534, Sebastián de Belalcázar asked Francisco Pizarro to grant him the governorship of this province, as Pizarro did not accept the proposal, Belalcázar decided to become independent and undertook a trip north, already aware of the famous legend of El Dorado , from Cundinamarca.

In the town of Lata Cunda, Ecuador, Belalcázar ordered Pedro de Añazco and Juan de Ampudia to advance an expedition to the north, which he would follow a little behind a few days apart.

They passed the Pastos region, the Patía valley, the Pubén valley and, finally, after almost two years of struggles and discoveries, they reached the lands of the chief Jamundí, where they engaged in a bloody struggle with the Indians, beginning thus the discovery and conquest of the Valle del Cauca territory.

Pedro de Añazco and Juan de Ampudia, with some 250 expedition members, settled on the famous cacique's estates. From there they sent Francisco de Cieza to explore the eastern bank of the Cauca River, receiving the news that an expedition of white people was approaching. Ampudia immediately set out to found a town so that the visitors would find it possessed; this took place at the end of March 1536, receiving the name of Fuerte Ampudia and naming Francisco de Cieza and Solano de Quiñones as the first mayors.

Shortly after, the announced white expeditionaries arrived, who turned out to be Belalcázar and his companions; Among them were Jorge Robledo and Miguel Muñoz, who played important roles in the discovery and conquest of our department.

Wrongly, the priests who accompanied Belalcázar arranged the celebration of Holy Week, in an improvised rustic wooden altar, lit and adorned with wax candles, which they cautiously brought from Spain for some festivities.

There were also wild flowers and shrubs that were used in the decoration, the corresponding masses were officiated and the communion was distributed. But later, consulting the calendar, they realized that Holy Week had been celebrated eight days in advance.

Due to the attacks by the Indians, the inhabitants decided to move the population to the place known as Los Cedros, and shortly after to the plain of the Claro river, giving this name to the new population, which was later changed to El Rosario. and finally, in the last century, it received the definitive name in honor of the brave cacique Jamundí.
