In spite of the difficulties to find its entrance, this church is one of the most outstanding monuments of the Old Town Square and throughout the historical district of Staré Město: surrounded by low houses, the church of black towers - one of the most important gothic buildings of Prague - deserves to be included in the list of places to be visited.
Being a traditionally commercial district, the Old Town of Prague was dominated during the Middle Ages by a prosperous and powerful bourgeoisie. Financed by this commercial elite, with the intention of competing with the Prague Cathedral, located on the other side of Vltava, the church Our Lady of Týn, sometimes called "cathedral of the bourgeois", was built during the second half of the 14th century in the where there was an old Romanesque building, which was already home to foreign merchants. The church is right next to the courtyard of Týn, which has its name, and was the place where goods received taxes (Ungelt in German).
The bustling history of the monument reflects the political and religious changes of the kingdom of Bohemia over the centuries: center of reformist preachers since the 14th century, the church was converted to the Hussite cult in the fifteenth century, being the seat of the only reformed church archbishop: during this time, the Latin cross was replaced by an immense golden chalice (symbol of the Hussite church) and a statue of Georges de Poděbrady, the only Hussite king of history. During the period of the Catholic reconquest, the chalice was fused and replaced by the virgin, who has since decorated the façade.
While the main facade to the square is hidden by low houses, the most dazzling decoration is in one of its lateral facades, which has a relief that represents the crucifixion and several episodes of the Passion of Christ.
Inside the church, the vertical lines shelter a Baroque decoration of great artistic value. The marble tomb of the astronomer Tycho Brahe is visible on the first southern column.
