Nelle Guerre della Restaurazione c'era un'ovvia necessità di difendere il Regno dall'offensiva spagnola, specialmente nelle città e nelle città di frontiera.
È in questo contesto che sono state costruite numerose fortificazioni in queste località, precisamente a Estremoz. Non esattamente una città di frontiera, serviva come seconda linea di difesa del territorio, specialmente nel supporto logistico (deposito di armi, rifornimenti e truppe). Fu D. João IV (1640-1656), il primo dei Braganças a regnare in Portogallo, che nel 1642 ordinò a João Pascácio Cosmander il progetto del futuro muro poligonale a mensola di Estremocense. Questo lavoro avrebbe protetto il villaggio da ipotetici attacchi e avanzamenti delle truppe spagnole, ei nuovi bastioni furono adattati per le pesanti battaglie di artiglieria.
Il Porto di Santa Catarina mantiene una nicchia di devozione alla patrona, avendo come elemento più interessante la garanzia del round militare, nella stilizzazione del cannone e nobilitato dallo scudo regale del Portogallo.
