The Arab occupation reconstructed the Castle but the conquest of Messejana to the Moors, made by D. Sancho II in 1235 took it again to the ruin, nevertheless the king D. Dinis had it restored in 1288.

The castle had a stone wall all around, and its keep was 10 meters high, and still can be seen the remains of the side facing the village.

The Castle of Messejana is perched on a hill next to the Mother Church, at an altitude of 219 meters and is thought to have been built by the Romans.

Considered one of the ex-libris of the settlement, the ruins of the Castle of Messejana and surrounding, were classified as Property of Public Interest, in 1992.

An indispensable visit.
