The remote culture of the Atavillos flourished in the area. Then, at the beginning of the 16th century, it was dominated by the Inca Pachacútec during his march to the north. The Spanish conquerors found a prosperous town in Canta.
It was delivered as a commission to Don Nicolás de Ribera, the Young Man. During the campaign for independence from the Spanish crown, its inhabitants gave great support to the liberating cause. For this reason, in 1839 it was declared ´´heroic town´´.
104 km northeast of the city of Lima, on the left bank of the Chillón River, is the peaceful and picturesque town of Canta, capital of the province of the same name.
The vision of its narrow and steep streets, and its old houses with their traditional gabled roofs, take the traveler to another time, and make him the protagonist of a traditional postcard.
The province extends from the heights of the Cordillera de La Viuda to the limits of the province of Lima. It includes the districts of Arahuay, Huamantanga, Huaros, Canta, San Buenaventura, Lachaqui and Santa Rosa de Quives.
