Umbrian Nativity Scene. Its name comes from the Umbrian Indians who founded the region in 1890. Other names that the municipality has received: Higueronal, which was later called Arenales, then Belén de Umbría, then Mocatán and finally again Belén de Umbría.
Reference distance: 75 km. scored by Pereira Risaralda.
Regarding the Department, it limits to the north with the municipalities of Mistrató and Guática (Department of Risaralda), to the east with the municipalities of Anserma and Risaralda (Department of Caldas), to the south with Apía (Department of Risaralda), Viterbo and San José (Department of Caldas), to the west with Pueblo Rico.
Its topography is 80% mountainous because it is located in the foothills of the right bank of the western mountain range.
It is rich in water resources, fauna and flora, the latter being varied, due to the diversity of climates, the vegetation being characterized by the tropical rainforest forests, mainly to the west, and the pastures and high stubble in the lower paths.
The climate is warm in the Risaralda River Valley, medium in most of its territory and cold in the northwest of the municipality. The páramo is relatively scarce.
The economy of the Municipality is based on agricultural activity and, to a lesser extent, livestock, commercial activity, micro-business and mining; Traditional agriculture is centered on the cultivation of coffee, which is carried out in a technical way, providing the largest number of jobs in the region; On a smaller scale, plantain, cassava, corn, beans and cold weather crops such as blackberry, tree tomato, lulo and granadilla are managed. In the Isla y Remolinos sector there is an important citrus production.
The diversification of these crops has not boomed due to the lack of adequate commercialization.
The municipality of Belén de Umbría, has as economic and social axis the cultivation of coffee and its growers, currently of the 18,248 hectares that the municipality has, 8,300 are used for cultivation in 2605 coffee farms, which generates 13,815 direct jobs and income from more than 30,000 million pesos annually.
Currently it is estimated that 57,600 arrobas of parchment coffee are sold in its equivalent in green (wet) and cherry.
At the municipal level, the promotion of the practice of selling coffee stood out, with the consequence of lower income for the coffee grower (5% less per arroba sold); decrease in rural employment and the social factor due to insecurity generated by marketing green or cherry coffee in the municipality (theft of coffee on the farms); For this reason, a strategy to take advantage of the technological advancement of the coffee union will be implemented in the municipality, the involvement of UNISARC students, as well as the extension service of the Coffee Growers Committee and integration of the UMATA in an educational proposal to awaken awareness of the quality of coffee as a guarantor of better income for coffee growers. These institutes have contributed to the development and improvement of the quality of life of the locals.
Between mountains segmented by the Risaralda and Guarne rivers, Belén de Umbría has a series of attractions that make it a mandatory destination for tourists who come to the department, the most important natural settings being: La Cascada de Los Ángeles, Morro del Obispo , the Botanical Garden and the Valle de Umbría Nature Reserve, as well as the Eliseo Bolívar Archaeological Museum at Hacienda La Arboleda, are the points of interest in this corner of Rio de Janeiro.
