Visiting the village of Pitões das Júnias
Recommended Season: All year
Recommended time: 3 days
One of my great surprises was visiting the village of Pitões das Júnias.
I arrived on the 28th of December, with a lot of rain and cold wind and my intention was just to have a look around and continue my journey to Spain.
While I was visiting the village I decided to stop for a while at a bar in one of the cobbled streets and granite houses and have a cup of tea. Talking to some people they ended up telling me that in the village it was customary to have a very interesting end of the year with a log burning in the square and each one brought their own food and drink and the party was very welcoming. So, I decided to go to the Lobios spa and return to the village of Pitões das Júnias on the 31st for New Year's Eve. It was the best option, as we are traveling by motorhome and to help the village there is a space for motorhomes to park.
On the 31st, at night, we decided to have dinner at a local restaurant, Restaurante do Preto, and then go spend the end of the year in the square with the people.
It was one of the best New Year's Eves I've ever spent and with that I ended up staying 2 more days to see what the village has to show.
On day 1, even under heavy rain, we decided to visit the Convent of Santa Maria de Pitões, a walk of about 800 meters, but with rain, the access trail was more like a river, but we went there anyway. It's so worth it.
The rest of the day was spent drying clothes and recovering from the cold.
The next day, January 2nd, we went to visit another of the village's attractions, the Pitões waterfall, after about 300 meters of trail, plus 350 meters of walkways, we arrived at the imposing waterfall, in fact the waterfall viewpoint because the waterfall itself is very difficult access and with rain it is practically impossible to get there.
Below you can see the photos and information of each of the places we visited in Pitões das Júnias.

Located in the middle of the Peneda-Gerês park in the north of Portugal in the Barroso region, the village of Pitões das Júnias with about 151 inhabitants is located at almost 1200 meters of altitude, making it one of the highest villages in Portugal.
Pitões das Júnias is part of the community villages in the north of Portugal where systems of inter-help, management and collective exploitation of heritage are still active: the village council, the bread oven, the herds, etc.
Most of the houses still maintain the granite constructions, narrow cobbled streets, the many fountains, granaries and the melancholic life of the inhabitants.
In the village of Pitões das Júnias, we have a street which they called Rua dos Brasileiros, due to the high number of local inhabitants who immigrated to Brazil in the past.
In Pitões das Júnias, there are 2 good restaurants with regional dishes, one of which also has tourist accommodation. Restaurante do Preto and Restaurante Dom Pedro.

Located just over 2 km from Pitões das Júnias, the Monastery of Santa Maria das Júnias has been classified as a National Monument since 1950.
Despite being in ruins, the chapel is still in perfect condition and every year in August there is a party there.
This monastery predates the existence of Portugal as it dates back to an ancient pre-Romanesque hermitage, founded in the 9th century, whose implantation obeyed isolation criteria. It is located in a narrow valley, difficult to access and far from roads and inhabited places, set in a grandiose landscape background. The monks of Júnias depended on pastoralism, a fact that accentuated their humble and ascetic character, being also one of the most isolated in the whole country.

The Pitões das Júnias waterfall viewpoint allows you to view the waterfall, which is over 30 meters high, located not far from the village.
Access is by car to the parking lot, about 2km, then about 400 meters along a track and the last 350 meters along a wooden walkway to the viewpoint.
To go even to the waterfall only when the weather is very good as access is very dangerous.
