In de hersteloorlogen was er een duidelijke behoefte om het koninkrijk te verdedigen tegen het Spaanse offensief, vooral in grenssteden en steden.
In deze context werden op deze locaties verschillende vestingwerken gebouwd, met name in Estremoz. Niet bepaald een grensdorp, het fungeerde als de 2e verdedigingslinie van het grondgebied, vooral in logistieke ondersteuning (wapenopslag, bevoorrading en troepen). Het was D. João IV (r. 1640-1656), de eerste van de Bragança die regeerde in Portugal, die in 1642 João Pascácio Cosmander opdroeg de toekomstige veelhoekige Estremocense abaluartada muur te ontwerpen. Dit werk zou het dorp beschermen tegen hypothetische aanvallen en oprukken door Spaanse troepen, en de nieuwe bolwerken werden aangepast voor zware artillerie gevechten.
De haven van Évora is de buiteningang van de oude wijk van Santiago, met als het meest relevante element een ophaalbrug, en later zijn functionele elementen en dikke ijzeren kettingen opnieuw samengesteld.
