Dans les guerres de la restauration, il était de toute évidence nécessaire de défendre le royaume de l'offensive espagnole, en particulier dans les villes frontalières.
C'est dans ce contexte que plusieurs fortifications ont été construites à ces endroits, notamment à Estremoz. Pas exactement un village frontalier, il fonctionnait comme la 2e ligne de défense du territoire, notamment en matière de soutien logistique (dépôt d’armes, fournitures et troupes). C'est D. João IV (1640-1656), le premier de Bragança à régner au Portugal, qui ordonna en 1642 à João Pascácio Cosmander de concevoir le futur mur polygonal Estremocense abaluartada. Ce travail protégerait le village des attaques hypothétiques et des avances des troupes espagnoles, et les nouveaux remparts seraient adaptés aux batailles d'artillerie lourde.
Le port d’Évora est l’entrée extérieure de l’ancien quartier de Santiago. Il a pour élément le plus important un pont-levis et a ensuite reconstitué ses éléments fonctionnels et ses épaisses chaînes de fer.
