Ilha Deserta is een van de best bewaarde en minder bezochte stranden in de Algarve. De toegang is over zee, vanaf de Pier van Porta Nova, zijnde de oversteek zeer aangenaam, te kunnen worden waargenomen de labyrinten van zand en vasa van Ria Formosa, kanalen en oevers van moeras. Onderweg moeten we ook aandacht besteden aan de verschillende vogels die hier voeden, zoals de flamingo's.
Ongeveer 10 km stilte en rust kenmerken het verlaten eiland, waar alles perfect tussen werelden lijkt te passen, zoals land, zee en lucht. Het zand ademt van het leven, voedt verschillende soorten weekdieren: tweekleppigen, schelpen en vele andere schelpen. Het duinlint behoudt zijn oorspronkelijke vegetatie en de flora vindt zijn maximale pracht verstopt op de binnenste helling de meest kwetsbare soort. Ook de fauna wordt beschermd, voornamelijk vogels: strandlopers, garajaus, sternen van de zee, gaivinas of chiretas.
