Ilha Deserta è una delle spiagge meglio conservate e meno frequentate dell'Algarve. L'accesso avviene via mare, dal molo di Porta Nova, essendo la traversata molto piacevole, potendo essere osservati i labirinti di sabbia e vasa di Ria Formosa, canali e argini di palude. Sulla strada dobbiamo anche prestare attenzione ai vari uccelli che si nutrono qui, come i fenicotteri.
Circa 10 km di silenzio e quiete caratterizzano l'isola deserta, dove tutto sembra adattarsi perfettamente a mondi distinti come terra, mare e aria. La sabbia respira di vita, nutrendo diverse specie di molluschi: vongole, conchiglie e molti altri gusci. Il cordone delle dune conserva la sua vegetazione originaria e la flora trova il suo massimo splendore nascondendo nel pendio interno le specie più fragili. Anche la fauna è protetta, in particolare gli uccelli: piro-carassi, ginestre, sterne di mare, gaivinas o chiretas.
